The numbers

Read a cricket scorecard

Turn a line of numbers into a story you can follow.

Runs and wickets

An illustrative score of 84/2 means 84 runs with two wickets lost. This is a teaching example, not a live match.

Overs are not decimals

12.3 overs means 12 completed overs and three valid balls of the next over. It is not 12.3 in decimal arithmetic. An over comprises six valid balls.

Keep the context

A score alone cannot tell you the result. Check which innings is underway, the target if any, and the match format.

Practice

Pause a scorecard and explain each field in your own words. Separate team totals, individual figures and extras.
